Just the Facts

Tasmania is an island state.  It is also the smallest state in Australia.

The Bass Strait separates Tasmania from the Australian mainland.

Tasmania was originally known as Van Dieman’s Land. It is the second oldest of the Australian colonies.

A large portion of this state is covered by mountains. Tasmania’s tallest peak is Mount Ossa, which is 5,305 feet above sea level.
Tasmania has the highest average rainfall of any Australian state.
Tasmania is home to over 5 million sheep that produce more than 20,000 tons of wool a year.
They grow and sell over 60,000 tons of apples a year.
People fish for scale fish, shark, scallops, oysters, abalone and crayfish in this area.
Almost half the state is covered by forest. This timber is used to produce native hardwood for building and construction, and paper products.
Saw-milling and wood-chipping are important jobs in Tasmania.
